Pua Kumbu

THE LEGEND OF “PUA KUMBU”Legend has it that about 24 ages before, Singalang Burong, the God of War, taught his son, Surong Gunting, how to use the most holy of all the pua, the Lebur Api, at the end of a conflict. The minds of their fallen enemies were gotten ceremonially with this fabric, which had been colored a deep red colour. That pua was stitched at Batu Gelong, the longhouse which was home to the goddesses of weaving, particularly Kumang, Indai Abang, and Lullong.Today, the lifestyle and values of the Iban community remain closely from the pua kumbu. Little girls are taught the art of weaving by their grandmothers and mothers. Iban rituals and ceremonies are incomplete without needing the sacred material for births, partnerships, death, fertility or even the planting of rice. The pua kumbu can also be used throughout essential activities such as Gawai and soul-searching ceremonies because it is thought to be an easy method of communication between the planets of the living and the dead. To the Iban’s, communications between both of these worlds are important, particularly for a tribe that reveres its ancestors and spirits. Their world is one where previous ancestors stroll about, spirits stay and ancient mythical gods still rule. The weavers icy out a woven visual style of the Iban animistic values, the spiritual sphere and the world view of life such as trees, creatures, insects, jungle life, natural and supernatural life. It’s said that the better and complex the design, the closer it delivers the weavers to the religious world. Consequently, the more efficient the design, the greater is the danger to the weavers.Prayers are recited before the start of every procedure to shield the weavers from harm or disease the weavers may sustain during the building of the pua kumbu. The weavers will often have a mystical experience when it comes to developing the patterns for the pua. Thus, the building of the pua kumbu is recognized as a spiritual and religious journey and the sacredness of the process is respected in the Iban community.Weaving is also a way of elevating the position of Iban women. A lady, based on the usage of color, design and ability, may squeeze into a certain list within the city. To be able to be a master weaver, a woman needs to progress the list by treating a more complex problem.
