About Back Pain – What Causes Back Pain

While most people, especially those living in the United States of America, suffer back pain at some point of their lives, most people are not aware of what causes back pain and are therefore, not able to take steps to prevent it in their lifetime.

One of the common causes of back pain is mechanical problems. These problems are basically the result of the way the spine behaves when you move it or when you move the spine in a certain way. The commonest of these mechanical problems is a condition known as the intervertebral disc degeneration. This means that the discs located within the vertebrae of the spine get decayed because of advancing age. With the onset of age, the discs lose their cushioning ability. Other mechanical problems are muscle tension, spasms, herniated discs and spasms.

Many instances of back pain are the result of injuries sustained like sprains and fractures. These can bring about sporadic back pain or lead to prolonged pain and suffering. Sprains are basically tears in ligaments that support the spine and are usually brought about by completely avoidable conditions like bending or lifting objects incorrectly. Fractured vertebrae, on the other hand, are the result of osteoporosis, condition that causes weak bones. Sometimes, injuries from falls can also lead to back pain.

There are conditions like scoliosis and arthritis, among others, that can lead to debilitating back pain. Arthritis is of various types like rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Other conditions like ankylosing spondylitis and spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal canal, can lead to severe back pain. Osteoarthritis by itself is not painful but it can lead to fractures which can be crippling. Back pain can also be brought on by conditions like pregnancy, kidney stones, endometriosis, or the build up uterine tissue outside the uterus and a condition known as fibromyalgia, a condition that causes great muscle pain along with fatigue.

Infections and tumors that involve the vertebrae of the spine can also cause a great deal of back pain. Tumors in the spine are rare but when they do occur, they can lead to debilitating back pain. Sometimes these tumors do not start in the spine but are secondary tumors that spread from other parts of the body.

Most of the causes of back pain, except injuries and conditions resulting from bad posture are not avoidable. A lot many of these cases are aggravated by emotional distress or mental pain and anxiety. Mental stress can play havoc with the muscular systems, increasing pain and causing a great deal of discomfort.

It is useful to know about the causes of back pain so that one can take steps that can stall its onset or find ways to strengthen one’s back. Knowing simple back exercises and following an exercise regime religiously can go a long way in preventing or lessening back pain. Avoiding emotional distress and anxiety can also help tackle Back pain to a large extent.
